A Closer Look at Facelift Surgery
What Can a Facelift Do for Me?
Time, gravity, and exposure to the sun can cause your facial skin to lose its elasticity. There are several important areas of fat beneath your skin that provide contour to your face. When the skin sags, these fat pads fall out of position, which causes prominent folds and a hollowed appearance. A facelift is designed to correct these aesthetic issues that develop with age, and can specifically improve:
- Deep creases below the lower eyelids
- Deep creases extending along the nose to the corner of the mouth
- Fat that has fallen or is displaced
- Jowls caused by loss of muscle tone
- Loose skin and extra fat under the chin and jaw

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
We do not recommend plastic surgery if you smoke or suffer from a serious health condition. These could increase your risk of complications and impede your recovery after surgery. Please talk to our doctor about your medical history and any medications you are taking so we can ensure your safety during treatment.
While you can technically undergo a facelift at any age (health permitting), most good candidates are between the ages of 40 and 70. Your age is related to many factors that can affect treatment, including skin elasticity, texture, and the ability to recover after surgery. During your consultation we will discuss your surgical options and help you select a method that is age-appropriate and effective.
The key to being satisfied with the results of any plastic surgery is having realistic expectations. While a facelift is one of the most effective and long-lasting anti-aging procedures, there are limitations to the surgery. Rhytidectomy can't completely stop the aging process. During your consultation, it is important to ask questions so you can make an informed decision about your treatment plan.
Facelift Procedure Variations
A mid-facelift (sometimes referred to as a cheek lift) is a facial plastic surgery technique that targets the cheek area between the eyes and the mouth. The goal is to restore volume and definition in the cheeks where fat and skin have descended. A mid-facelift involves shorter incisions, less recovery time, and minimal chance of visible scarring, making the procedure an ideal solution for mild to moderate sagging. If you are looking for more comprehensive enhancement, we can combine your mid-facelift with a neck lift to eliminate excess skin and sagging below the chin.
Deep Plane Facelift
The deep plane facelift is an innovative technique that corrects substantial signs of aging in the mid-face, chin, and neck areas. During this procedure, the skin and the underlying muscle are tightened in unison, avoiding the overdone, swept appearance that can result from targeting the facial skin alone. The deep plane facelift reaches a deeper layer of the facial anatomy than the standard SMAS facelift, offering more natural-looking and long-lasting effects. Unfortunately, that also means the deep plane facelift is more invasive, so you should be in great health before surgery.
A Step-By-Step Look at the Procedure
Our facelifts are done as outpatient surgeries, meaning you will return home the day of your procedure.
"Dr. McCall reshaped my ear lobes, and did a fantastic job. I wish I would have done this procedure years ago. The procedure was painless, and the healing time easy. I went to work the next day. My ears are beautiful. Extremely happy." Renee F., 5-Star Reviews
The Facelift Recovery Process
When you visit our Waukesha, WI, practice, serving the greater Milwaukee, WI, area, we will provide you with a comprehensive list of post-surgical instructions. Some of these include:
- You must stop smoking for at least three weeks prior to and three weeks after the surgery.
- You will be advised to keep your head elevated for the first few days after surgery.
- You can expect some swelling that may take four to 12 weeks to disappear, depending on the technique used.
- Bruising may develop and last for two to three weeks.
- The majority of our facelift patients are able to go out in public with make-up after about 10 to 14 days.
Facelift Surgery Results
Since facelift surgery is relatively invasive, it can take some time before the final results settle in. Most patients will notice a dramatic difference once the majority of swelling and bruising subside (typically in three to four weeks), but complete recovery takes much longer. It is normal for residual swelling to persist for several months, so be patient. Within six months to a year, all temporary side-effects should fade, leaving you with the full results of your enhancement.
The longevity of your facelift can vary, but it is not uncommon for the results to last ten years or longer. You can help prolong the effects by practicing good skin care and leading a healthy lifestyle.
Minimally Invasive & Nonsurgical Facelift Alternatives
Renuvion® is a minimally invasive procedure that tightens and rejuvenates the skin. The innovative Renuvion device is inserted under the skin, delivering helium gas and radiofrequency energy to the subdermal tissues. The gas and energy cause the tissues to contract and create new collagen, leading to tighter, more youthful-looking skin. Renuvion treatment can be used in several regions of the body, such as the face, neck, and abdomen. While the effects are less dramatic than those of a facelift, the procedure involves smaller incisions, minimal downtime, and less chance of visible scarring.
Completely nonsurgical enhancement is also possible with a range of injectables. Injectable treatments provide more subtle enhancement than a facelift, but are quick, easy, and safe for most patients. JUVÉDERM® is a versatile solution for several common signs of aging. The dermal filler is injected underneath the skin to restore volume, increase definition, and smooth out deep creases and wrinkles. BOTOX® Cosmetic is another popular injectable treatment. BOTOX injections are designed to temporarily paralyze targeted muscles and prevent the muscle contractions that cause wrinkles.
