As people age, they are likely to notice that the skin loses its natural elasticity. This translates to looser skin that is more likely to look creased or wrinkled. While there are many cosmetic surgeries that can enhance the appearance of facial skin, many patients come to plastic surgeon Tracy E. McCall looking for a less-invasive option. In many of these cases, Juvederm® is the ideal solution.
Juvederm® is a cosmetic filler that adds volume to facial features and smoothes out the skin to minimize the appearance of even the most severe lines, wrinkles, and creases. One of the greatest benefits of Juvederm® treatment is that it requires no downtime and results in minimal side effects. Here, we discuss the few Juvederm® side effects that our Milwaukee, WI patients may develop following treatment with Dr. McCall.
Juvederm® treatment is a quick cosmetic procedure that is virtually pain-free and requires no downtime for recovery. It is often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure,” because treatment takes just about 30 minutes, and patients leave our offices feeling well enough to resume all of their usual activities.
During the Juvederm® procedure, a small needle will be used to inject the Juvederm® solution into the treatment site. Although most patients do not feel any significant pain during treatment, anesthetic can be used to numb the treatment area first.
Juvederm® is a gel solution that contains hyaluronic acid. The gel offers an immediate boost to skin volume, while the hyaluronic acid attracts water to gradually restore moisture to skin cells and improve skin volume. Within the weeks after treatment, patients will notice a marked reduction in lines, wrinkles, and creases, as well as improvement in facial volume and contours.
Juvederm® Side Effects
In many instances, patients have virtually no side effects following Juvederm® treatment. However, it is common for minimal side effects to develop at or around the injection site. The most likely side effects of Juvederm® treatment include:
- Itching or irritation
- Light bruising
- Minimal swelling
All of these side effects should be minor and short-lived. If bruising or redness does develop, it is usually light and can be concealed with make-up. Any tenderness or irritation should also be easily managed. In most cases, these side effects will clear up on their own within a few days after treatment, although it may take slightly longer for bruises to disappear completely.
In rare cases, a patient may develop severe side effects after Juvederm® treatment. Side effects such as a rash, hives, blisters, severe swelling, or fever are not normal. If these side effects develop, they should be reported right away, as they may be signs of an allergic reaction. However, since Juvederm® is comprised primarily of ingredients found naturally in the body, it is unlikely that a patient will experience any allergic reactions or complications after Juvederm® treatment.
