Candidates Who May Benefit from a Tummy Tuck

By tmccall on November 10, 2014

A trim and slender female waistlineWhen imperfections on the body become a prominent concern, many people turn to plastic surgery. Plastic surgery allows patients to address problem areas in order to enhance their natural appearance. While many types of surgery are available, one procedure that is especially popular is a tummy tuck, which smooths and tightens the stomach to create a more toned appearance and a more pleasing body contour. This procedure is so popular, not only because it is effective, but also because the tummy is a troublesome area for so many people. While plastic surgery may not be the right choice for everybody, a number of our Milwaukee patients are ideal tummy tuck candidates.

Am I a Tummy Tuck Candidate?

In order to accurately determine if a patient is an ideal candidate for tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Tracy McCall will need to conduct a personal consultation. This consultation will include a discussion of the patient’s goals, a visual examination of the treatment area, and a discussion regarding the patient’s current health as well as their health history. All of this information is important in concluding whether a patient is physically able to undergo surgery without an increased risk of complication, whether the patient has realistic goals for the results of surgery, and whether a tummy tuck is the right procedure for producing the results the patient desires.

While a personal consultation is the only accurate way to determine surgical candidacy, there are some general guidelines that can help patients determine whether a tummy tuck might be right for them. Below are some common areas of concern that can be corrected through a tummy tuck procedure:

  • Loose, stretched abdominal muscles
  • Stretched skin around the abdominal area
  • A protruding lower belly
  • A loss of contour, tone, and definition to the waistline
  • Stubborn fat around the tummy that has been resistant to diet or exercise
  • Stretch marks around the lower stomach (particularly common in women who have experienced pregnancy or those who have had fluctuations in their weight)

While a tummy tuck can successfully address these problems and create a tighter, more toned stomach, patients should understand that this is not a weight loss procedure and is not ideal for patients who are significantly over weight. Ideally, a tummy tuck should be performed on patients who are at (or close to) their ideal weight range.

Additional Treatments

In some cases patients, may be interested in more enhancement than that which can be provided through a tummy tuck alone. We do offer additional body contouring treatments that can enhance the results of a tummy tuck. Some procedures that may be considered include liposuction and a lower body lift. If patients are interested in learning more about these procedures, Dr. McCall is happy to answer any questions.
