Massive weight loss offers people a healthier future and a new outlook on life. But people who have successfully shed weight may feel the benefits of weight loss remain just out of reach.
Instead of having a sleek, toned exterior that matches the new number on their bathroom scale, they are faced with sagging and excess skin that distorts the true extent of their weight loss.
There is a solution. Plastic surgeon Tracy McCall, serving Milwaukee and the surrounding area, performs skin tightening surgery, also called a body lift, which can redefine your contours after massive weight loss.
A body lift is plastic surgery treatment plan that tightens and reshapes contours of the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and breasts. In general, a body lift combines several traditional contouring techniques into the same surgery, such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift, buttock lift, and breast lift.
The procedure improves body tone and removes excess skin that distorts your silhouette. Body lifts typically are performed after massive weight loss, but may also solve problems with lax skin from aging or childbearing.
Ideal candidates have maintained a stable weight for six months to a year and exercise regularly while eating a healthy diet. A person who has had gastric bypass or other gastric procedures should wait at least a year after surgery so health problems associated with weight can improve. If you are a woman, a body lift should be delayed until after any planned pregnancies.
Lower Body Lift
A lower body lift contours the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and lower back. The technique involves creating a belt-like incision around the body, at about waist level in the back but dipping to just above the pubic hair in front. Additional incisions around the thighs may also be made. Throughout the process, tissue underneath will be reshaped and excess skin removed. If needed, pockets of fat can also be liposuctioned.
This combination of a tummy tuck and additional treatments to contour the hips and buttocks will smooth out the lower body, creating a toned silhouette.
Upper Body Lift
An upper body lift involves a broad bra-line excision of skin. The technique improves the breasts, chest, and middle back, eliminating rolls of fat from the back while also narrowing the waist. Excess skin under the breasts or on the lower rib cage is removed and the area is tightened to produce a toned upper body.
Total Body Lift
A total body lift is a body lift combined with additional skin tightening procedures, such as an inner thigh lift, facelift, or arm lift. Or, it could be a combination of an upper and lower body lift. Depending on the extent of the surgery, these may be performed at the same time or in stages. Risks increase when multiple treatments are performed at the same time, so surgeries may be staggered to reduce the risks.
Though the assortment of skin tightening treatments is initially confusing, the spectrum of techniques allows a skilled plastic surgeon to tailor treatment to your particular issues.
